Our story is rooted in agriculture and family values. It began with Samuel Rosenberg, a Seattle hotel owner who, in 1910, traded his prized Hotel Sorrento for 240 acres of pear orchards in Southern Oregon’s Rogue River Valley. His sons, Harry and David, later took over what would become Bear Creek Orchards. Armed with agricultural degrees from Cornell University, the brothers focused on perfecting the Comice pear. They soon discovered that Oregon’s Rogue Valley produced pears even more flavorful than those from the variety’s native France. Naming their premium fruit the Royal Riviera® Pear, Harry & David built a thriving business, supplying luxury hotels and restaurants in the U.S. and Europe. When the Great Depression shifted the market, the brothers pivoted creatively. They began selling their pears by mail—an innovative idea at the time. In 1934, Harry & David traveled to major cities, introducing their pears as the perfect corporate gift. Orders quickly grew, marking the start of the company we know today. Now, as one of the country’s earliest and most trusted mail-order brands, Harry & David continues to innovate while honoring its heritage.
